Nah, Kid.

Who: Jason Surban
Age: 30
City: Chicago, IL
Profession: Job Juggler, Rapper

“Whatever happened to rap?” I ask Jason, who’s telling me with pride about his five jobs. It always was his passion. As a white, 30-year-old who, when in conversation, looks like he’s serenading you with a soon-to-be-released rap hit; Jason knows it’s an uphill battle. I remember that always being the case with Jason. He and I use to work together waiting tables in a diner way back when. I randomly bump into him during on a short visit to Chicago.

“Nah, girl, I got this mad flexible job now that allows me to focus on my music an’ sh@!t.” Jason is attaching musical event posters to polls along the Halstad / Clark St route. Isn’t that illegal, I think to myself. “I just gotta get the word out for these cats and they pay me ill dough. It’s on my own time and everythin’,” Jason says, nodding his head in agreement with himself, and again, that look of pride. I always remember Jason sticking his fingers into all sorts of pies, some being a little more on the shady side like this one.

“So, when you performin’?” I ask, as I notice myself taking short cuts on the English language. “Oh, uh, you know, girl. When you here til?” I don’t intend to go see a rap show during my visit. Like I said, it’s a short one. But I wanted to know if he’s still going at it with a vengeance. We stroll to the next poll. “I think they want me to take over the company. I’ve been there for only 2 months, kid!” I wonder if there are any cops around. And then it dawns on me that I could rightly be fined for being an accomplice…
